Our Team
My ultimate goal is to help take the stress of building and remodeling off of my client’s shoulders by working with them to design a space that they love to walk into each day. Through space planning, selecting finishes from flooring and tile to paint and window treatments, to working with our remarkable tradespeople, my goal is to bring the visions and dreams my clients have to fruition. The best part is seeing the excitement in their eyes as they look at their finished space or getting that call or text sharing how their family or staff love how everything turned out. That truly warms my heart and puts the biggest smile on my face and is why I love what I do.
While I grew up in Fargo, I spent several years of my childhood as an MK (missionary kid) in Russia and Ukraine. It was during this time of living in the former Soviet Union that I began to cultivate a love for color, fabrics and design as a whole. I was often found sewing throw pillows to cozy up a room or called upon to dig through my fabric stash to find material to use for curtains or other projects. After returning to the United States in my teen years, I finished high school and pursued other interests prior to returning to college to gain my Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design.
I’m active in Russian Harvest Ministries, a church planting and evangelistic ministry my parents started over 30 years ago in Ukraine. I’m also involved in the Building Industry Association of the Red River Valley, serving on the Remodelers Council, Parade of Homes and Events committees and am involved in NDID (North Dakota Interior Designers). In the last few years, I took my love of animals and put it to use by becoming a foster mom to many cats, kittens, and puppies, through Homeward Animal Shelter and since I don’t have children of my own, I get my baby fix by helping out in the nursery at my home church, Harvest Valley, in Horace. My free time is spent with my fur kids, a dog, and 2 cats, working on home projects, and being with my family and friends.
I enjoy meeting people and visiting with them about their project to establish design solutions for their home or office. My goal is to make sure a client has a well thought out design plan which reflects their personality and fits within their timeline and budget. I have many years of experience in custom window treatments, furnishing layouts and selections, lighting, accessorizing, wallcovering, paint and flooring. I can help a customer as little or as much as they need on a project. If a client would like to work in phases I will help them to prioritize the stages of the project. Most importantly, I treasure the friendships I have made over the past 30 years working in the design field.
I graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. I have spent most of my years living in the Fargo/Moorhead area where my husband and I raised our family. On my free time I like to play with my dog, garden, crochet, read and spend time with family and friends at the lake in Minnesota.
Always interested in all things interior design, I started my career as an independent contractor designing, fabricating, and installing soft goods from my home-based design studio. Over my 20 years in business, I was grateful to work with many homeowners to help them create the custom design elements they were seeking for their homes. This business allowed me to develop the relationships, knowledge, and communication skills I have to best serve my clients today.
In recent years I’ve spent time honing my skills in cabinetry design, overall space planning, furniture layouts, material selections, and project management for both new build and remodel projects. I enjoy working with clients to guide them through the design process to their “I love my home“ moment! The best part of my job is that no project is ever the same and I get to learn something new every day!
My work from home also allowed me to be very involved in raising my three children with husband, Mark. We enjoyed the various sports and activities they participated in and now enjoy our time with them as young adults.
Sylvia's passion for working with people, combined with her design and construction background inspired her to founding Design Direction in 2005 after a series of events. Thinking she'd do this for a year turned into another year, and then another. Over time the business has expanded in both services and products offered as well as in team members.
Active in her home church, serving others and giving back to the community has always been an integral part of Design Direction throughout the years and has led to its growth and longevity.
In the Spring of 2024, Sylvia stepped into a new chapter of life - retirement, allowing her to fully embrace being a "grandma", savoring the time with her grandbabies, along with spending time with her family and friends.
